The safety rails rise 5" above the top of the mattress. The safety rails also serve as a Pillow Stop. The safety rails are attached to all four sides with an opening to enter the loft where the ladder is positioned. Top safety rail will be above the top of the mattress. The bottom safety rail will be below the top of the mattress and the Two (2) safety rails are required for mattresses up to 8" thick and three (3) safety rails for mattresses up to 16" thick. Youth Safety Rails: For youth beds the number of safety rails required is based on the thickness of your mattress. We designed our beds following the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) Loft Bed Bunk Bed Safety Guidelines and all beds (including college dorm beds) have Safety Rails. We designed them extending the legs above the mattress allowing for the safety rail to go the full length of the bed and securely attached to the legs. Since I initially built these for my own children, safety and stability were a primary concern.
